Record-shattering March scorcher: 70 million to bake in summerlike into weekend

Record-challenging heat will surge across the Southwest this week as a stubborn heat dome sends temperatures into the 90s and even past 100 degrees in some cities, levels more typical of late spring or early summer.

By Alex Sosnowski, AccuWeather senior meteorologist

" Much of the Southwest will jump from springlike conditions to summerlike heat this week, with temperatures climbing well into the 90s in many areas and even topping 100 degrees in some locations which are more typical of early summer. The heat dome will have staying power and may not begin to weaken until this weekend to early next week.

A burst of summerlike heat will build across the Southwest this week, pushing temperatures in many areas into the 90s and some past 100 degrees. Monthly records may be challenged, and the heat could hold into the weekend or early next week"

Natures Ability to Adapt to Human Activities Seems to be Slowing Down

"The bottom line, most ecologists contacted for this article agree, is that ecosystems in the 21st century need to change faster, with more turnover of species, in order to cope with human impacts, whether local land degradation or global climate change. Staying the same is no longer an option. But if the new study is right that turnover is declining sharply in most places, then they are in even more trouble that we thought.

So, what does this mean for conservation One implication is conceptual. The prevailing assumption among conservationists today remains that, as Jacob OSullivan of Forest Research puts it, ecological communities 'turn over predominantly in response to environmental change and direct anthropogenic pressures.' That assumption makes ecosystem change synonymous with ecosystem degradation and suggests that halting species turnoverkeeping the ecological rivets in placeshould be conservationists primary task.

But if, as the new ecology appears to demonstrate, species churn is a routine and necessary feature of healthy ecosystems, then protecting the rivets makes much less sense. 'Once we accept natural turnover as a force, we must accept change as natural and not to be fought against, despite our intuition to the contrary,' says James Rosindell at Imperial College London."

The principal reason why I really love this channel which is produced in India is that it is a completely different window onto the world by showing us outside of India, the sort of things that communities in India are doing in response to climate change to build resilience and to choose different economic pathways different from the ones the global economy tells us we can only choose from. They also do a significant amount of climate reporting.

Out today: This feels like a very colonialistic action. Somebody with a lot of money comes into your town, uses up all your resources, does not talk to the people that are there, makes money, and sends it somewhere else.

Uh, if is a myth, why do you need laws to protect corporations from being sued for causing it

> No accountability: Bills would ban liability lawsuits for climate change.

What we really need is some way to properly apportion out the blame. But with extra blame going to the corporations who've been concealing and outright lying about what their own scientists told them fifty years ago or more.

Exemplar of the gulf between exquisitely complicated physical sensitivities and the blundering, confused and substantially inchoate process of public policy formulation.

The scientific literature stream is choked with similar dilemmas. It's not confidence-inspiring. Policy outcomes threaten to bear little or even no resemblance to inputs from best we know.

"Using Earth System Modelling and detailed land use, habitat, and species projections, we show that policy implementation guided by relational values (Nature as Culture) could lead to additional warming and drying further threatening biodiversity and human well-being. Conversely, promoting intrinsic values (Nature for Nature) or ecosystem services (Nature for Society) would not add major challenges for climate adaptation and mitigation. These different outcomes highlight the need to develop integrative land use scenarios that enhance biodiversity and stabilise the climate, while considering feedbacks from land to the atmosphere. Such scenarios could help navigate trade-offs and inform policy implementation in Europe."

(unfortunately this policy input will remain invisible to most policy-makers as Springer-Nature must at all costs get more money, because "enough" is not in the vocabulary of pathological "I need more, always.")
