The great crested newt (Triturus cristatus) is a European Protected Species. A disjunct range edge population in the Scottish Highlands had been steadily declining until a restoration project that combined knowledge about the species local habitat requirements and genetic structure. The Highland population is genetically distinct, and its extirpation would represent the irreversible loss of a unique genetic lineage.
