Scope 3 the smoke from everything it sells is 91% of TotalEnergies' footprint. The exact 91% it spent years disowning. A Paris court just put it under emissions oversight. First on earth.

For years, TotalEnergies insisted the carbon from burning its product simply wasn't its problem.
Scope 3 the smoke from everything it sells is 91% of its entire carbon footprint. The exact 91% it spent years disowning. On Thursday a Paris court made it the first company on earth placed under court oversight of its emissions plan.
The ruling landed mid-heatwave one scientists say would've been virtually impossible without the warming these companies sold us. A coincidence with the subtlety of a slammed door.
Today's Gathering:

Sweet blessed relief there's finally a cool breeze outside & I can open my windows fully in the evening! The temp in my flat is already dropping! :ablobcatcry: This week's been no joke! Genuinely felt sick today.

Ordered an aircon unit for my flat. No way am I suffering this again. But considering the delivery window seems a lot of people've done likewise. Place your bets: what comes first, it or another heatwave

Adapting to the heat: four ideas from European cities

Officially it is between 35 and 36C this afternoon where I live (in the frozen north...), but with the concrete and tarmac here it is nearer to 40

Allianz: Extreme costs Germany billions and stifles economic growth. Total losses of 3% are possible by 2030. has become a structural economic shock and a central issue of economic that extends far beyond the sphere:

In East Africa, a Controversial Oil Project Is Poised for Production.

Despite years of opposition, a 900-mile crude oil pipeline through East Africa is about to be completed, and its environmental and social risks are coming into focus. Campaigners in Uganda and abroad are making a final push to halt the project before the oil starts to flow.

Labour must not fear talking about the climate

Climate action can be one of our strongest electoral assets, helping unite the broad coalition required to win a second term. But only if we get the messaging right

But the overwhelming scale makes it hard to picture aggregated impact. There are billions of people streaming music every day and putting these energy reduction steps into action would make a tangible difference at that scale

Young people from the lower-income countries most vulnerable to the effects of the climate crisis, including the toll it takes on their mental health, are being overlooked because their lack of internet access prevents them from taking part in research and accessing online support, a new study has found

really good explanation of how the "waviness" of the jet stream is getting locked in place more often due to (including, this summer, the super El Nino), leading to these intense heat domes and other weather events that just LINGER way longer than in pre-climate-change times

Here's an uneasy question. Let's say we get to Net-Zero tomorrow, will the climate go back to how it was The sad answer is, not in our lifetime, nor in the next millennium. But if we don't get to Net-Zero, things will get worse.
(How and should we reverse emissions is a separate discussion)

Am I odd for thinking you should never leave your child alone in the car regardless of the weather conditions

I appreciate the warnings that are making the rounds about how dangerous it is to leave your child or pet in the car in this heat, but I can't be but flabbergasted at the fact that this warning is needed in the first place not because obviously the heat is a problem, but because who the fuck leaves their child alone in the car!

Oh, this so Not Cool in every sense of the term.

Investors under-resourced for climate policy engagement, research finds

The majority of institutional investors have fewer than two employees working on climate policy advocacy, according to new research

Every news story on the human & ecological consequences of extreme weather events should include 3 angles:

1. How to deal with & survive the current crisis, and

2. How to rapidly transition the global economy away from fossil fuels

3. An admonition that we are rapidly warming & things will get much worse if we dont take point 2 seriously & act now.

Omitting 2 &3 is irresponsible journalism.

3:20 p.m. in the Netherlands, and the first part of the country has reached temperatures above 38C, with two stations above the 38.4 mark that used to be the all-time national high for 75 years, and was first exceeded in 2019.

Good points from (and others) on how the phrase "humans are to blame for climate change" can elide enormous power differences. Yes it's humans - but some a lot more than others, and system-construction more than any one person's individual choices.

As Europe is melting in 35C heat, it turns to deeptech to deal with the reality of climate change.

Current temperatures around the world.

2/n

So unbearably hot in the house today. The tropical nights dont give any opportunity to release the heat from inside meaning it was 28c indoors at 8am. Its actually more comfortable outside in the shade even though the air temperature is higher. Really feel for people who dont have outdoors space. Also feel immense hatred for people who loudly discount climate change and rail against net zero.
