I am probably stating the obvious, but I absolutely believe that the Liberal Party's backdown from their own promises was engineered and some time in the making. The National didn't just happen to walk away from net zero now and accidentally trigger the debate in the Liberal Party. This was planned, both to kill net zero and to give the Liberals a plausible reason to do so. It was planned, probably by senior Liberals and Nationals, and I wouldn't rule out pressure from major donors (we all know who they are). The Nationals staged the walkout and 'forced' the Lib's hands. This particular tail will never ever stop wagging this particular dog, and that's because the dog not only allows the tail to do so, but tells it to do so.

This also undermines Sussan Ley's leadership, but I don't think that was a primary objective. What matters most to them is that they've fully killed their already vague and meagre commitments to fighting climate change. They no longer have to pretend to give a shit.

Considering that the Labor Party likes to talk big when it comes to climate, but has consistently failed to put their money where their mouth is, this is dire. And don't get me started on the poll that shows more than half the voters either want net zero commitments gone, or be treated as 'aspirational rather than binding'.
