Are global river flows no longer natural Can we really talk about natural rivers The authors started asking ourselves these questions a few years ago over wonderful discussion sessions.
They argue that global river systems have entered a new phase, one of Anthropogenic River Flows, where flow regimes arise from the persistent interaction of:
the physical alteration of river systems,
the institutional and socio-technical organisation of water use and allocation
broader global and systemic processes operating across scales.
In the Anthropocene, these domains do not operate independently because a change in one alters how the other two function. Global water risks and river flow properties then become an emergent property of these interactions.
As a result, the authors call for a rethinking of how we study, understand, and manage river flows to better reflect this new reality

The biggest caveat I see to this study is it is based on gross averages rather than the distribution across individuals. I would suppose that subsets of the human population may be affected much worse by the long-term exposure to high ambient CO2 than others. It also wouldn't surprise me if municipalities compensated by repurposing methane distribution networks to instead supply high-oxygen atmosphere to residences.

Going back to , I have automation to prevent water pipes freezing, which turns on a BIG heating fan in basement when it's winter, outside is below - 5c and basement is below +5c at least five hours. Guess what, some glitch triggered the fan few years ago during summer, probably because the little Zigbee temperature probe got low battery. After that I added those extra safeguards.

I only now noticed two other magnitudes:
* I would have expected NZ historical emissions to have been smaller (now i suspect deforestation).
* India's figures are minuscule.
Both make sense because the chart is "per capita".

The first Von der Leyen Commission came up with a green deal. The second VDL Commission significantly weakened that deal. Hoekstra, the Climate Commissioner, just recently announced his plans to delay everything with yet another few years.

We have known for decades this was going to be a problem. We have known for years that things are accelerating at a much greater pace than anticipated.

The problem with his call for immediate action (other than being years late and see above) is that current governments need to pay the bill. He's right it will only cost more in the future, but that's not the problem of the leaders of today. If that were the case things would have started moving a long time ago.

The same government that is warning us to stock up on tinned food due to potential extreme weather events exacerbated by is also the same government thinking about approving the oilfield.
