"The collapse of a critical Atlantic current can no longer be considered a low-likelihood event, a study has concluded, making deep cuts to fossil fuel emissions even more urgent to avoid the catastrophic impact."

"The research found that if carbon emissions continued to rise, 70% of the model runs led to collapse, while an intermediate level of emissions resulted in collapse in 37% of the models. Even in the case of low future emissions, an Amoc shutdown happened in 25% of the models."

According to latest data the AMOC slowdown/shutdown is expected till 2050 with 59% probability.
I expect that much earlier. 10 years are really optimistic methinks. Let's see, what the effects will look like.

So, yes, this is from MSN -- however, it drives in the point about a lot of stuff from the updated projections.

Slide 4 seems to echo the quotes from Cline's 1177BC regarding resource extraction (tin) and the .

"4. Resource extraction costs skyrocket as materials become exhausted.

"The era of cheap, easily extracted natural resources is ending as mining operations move to increasingly remote locations, tap lower-grade ores, and require more energy-intensive processes to extract the materials that support industrial civilization. This fundamental shift in resource economics creates inflationary pressures that compound across every sector of the economy, making previously profitable activities uneconomical and forcing societies to choose between maintaining current consumption levels and investing in future sustainability.

"Energy return on investment ratios for fossil fuel extraction have declined steadily over decades, requiring more energy input to extract each unit of usable fuel while alternative energy sources struggle to match the energy density and scalability of conventional -based systems. The transition costs between energy systems create economic bottlenecks that can trigger the kind of systemic failures that characterize , particularly when resource constraints coincide with other stresses like , political instability, and demographic transitions."

Just an observation, but does it not seem like climate change predictions are concertinaing every year That is, the predictions are revised so that critical points happen sooner. I wonder if anyone has done a statistical analysis of the predictions over the last 20 years and extrapolated I wonder what the trend would be. And the resulting forecast

the study by World Weather Attribution said the fires that killed 20 people, forced 80,000 to evacuate and burned more than 1 million hectares (2.47 million acres) were 22% more intense in 2025, Europes worst recorded year of wildfires.

More from 1177BC...

"There are only a few instances in history of such globalized world systems the one in place during the Late Bronze age and the one in place today are two of the most obvious examples, and the parallels -- comparisons might be a better world -- between them are sometimes intriguing.

"To give just one illustration, Carol Bell, a British academician, has observed that 'the strategic importance of tin in the LBA Late Bronze Age ... was probably not far different from that of crude oil today. At that time, tin is thought to have been available in quantity only from specific mines in the Badakhshan region of Afghanistan and had to be brought overland all the way to sites in Mesopotamia (modern Iraq) and north Syria, from where it was distrbuted to points father north, south, or west, including onward across the sea to the Agean. Bell contianues, 'The availability of enough tin to produce ... weapons grade bronze must have exercised the minds of the Great King in Hattusa and the Pharaoh in Thebes the same way that supplying gasoline to the American SUV driver a reasonable cost preoccupies an American president today!"

Collapse of critical Atlantic current is no longer low likelihood, study findsScientists say shocking discovery shows rapid cuts in carbon emissions are needed to avoid catastrophic fallout

Thread So, the book is back in the news after the projections were updated. I've been doing a lot of reading and thinking about this topic (the preface of the book 1177BC, The Year Civilization Collapsed being the impetus).

My conclusion is that only and implementation of a lot of ideas (repairing stuff, building community, rewilding) will help us adapt to the coming changes. That's why I started SPS -- to highlight events, ideas and to build connections.

Yes, I am known for "Doomposting," but like with most things, I try and find solutions as well. Yeah, all the BS isn't helping -- in fact, it's a symptom of the desperation of the elites to hold onto their , , ways. And, well, we all know where that leads.

We may not be able to fix the climate or all the other things that are going wrong right away, but we can try to adapt, and make sure by doing so, we aren't making the problems worse for all the beings that live here on planet Earth.

I'll be posting some quotes in this thread -- some with commentary, some just by themselves. Do humans have all the answers Not sure (I know I don't)... But sticking our collective heads in the sand is NOT an option!

Future What future

Future What future

When Zack Polanski launched his leadership bid for the of England and Wales on a platform of eco-populism, I felt hopeful about politics for the first time in a while. His project is positioned against the far right and billionaires, but does it really have the power to win the rhetorical war over the future

Eco-populism focuses on economic policy that is simultaneously beneficial for working people and the climate. One programme in Pennsylvania, the USA, is a good example of what eco-populism could look like in practice: low- and moderate-income homeowners can get money from the state to install things like heat pumps and solar panels.

Despite the potential benefits, there are some people who are unsure about the chances that Polanski's eco-populism might have to succeed. The word populism, for example, has been associated with the right for decades now, and using the same term for a left-wing project could be used to create a false equivalency between the left and the right by the mainstream.

You can find out more about the pros and cons of eco-populism, and whether it can really challenge far-right narratives, by reading the full article .

Marine-climate interventions have received increased money and attention in recent years.

While many projects and ideas may be well-intentioned, theyre generally not subject to strong governance or oversight, and they often pose risks of social and ecological harm, according to a new paper.

The authors call for local, national and global rules that will make interventions safe, equitable and effective.
