I was asked by my son (5) if we could go there, pointing to a photo of a ski resort in Poland. I said no, because flying in planes is not good for the environment, and talked about carbon dioxide. My daughter (8) then shared her understanding that too much carbon dioxide would kill the environment. I shared my understanding that the environment cant be killed, but it can be changed, and that co2 levels changed a lot during the time of the dinosaurs and this changed the envionment.

Thinking about this conversation later in the day, there was something that I didnt quite convey. I think when we talk about rising CO2 levels destroying the environment we perpetuate the idea that humans are all powerful, when actually we are dependent on the environment in its current form. CO2 level may rise, global temperatures may rise, the earth may become uninhabitable for a lot of beings.

The idea that human acts are apart from nature is a corruption of the fact that we just got clever enough to game the world we live in and think there would be no consequences. Intelligence has run a race against wisdom, and intelligence won. Indigenous peoples the world over have seen this clearly, and have been uniformly overruled. Heck, even pot smoking hippies of the 60s could see it. A cancer cell has abandoned its charter as a part of a whole and starts eating away at its own foundations. We are comparable to a cancer and nature's immune response is at hand.

Australia backs landmark UN climate change ruling as others try to block it
By Stephen Dziedzic

A major Atlantic current is at a critical tipping point that could cause dramatic shifts in global weather patterns.

The signs of destabilization are visible already.

Should the AMOC weaken substantially, it could bring intense cold and stronger storms to Europe, raise sea levels across the northeast coast of N. America

A landmark on has received 's to pass.

Some 140 countries endorsed the legal ruling made by the last year.

season has already started in Oregon and California. Close to me in there are fires in Klamath County and just across the border in Shasta and Siskiyou Counties. Tankers and helis in the air. And in there are 44,000 residents of Simi Valley that have had to evacuate their homes. And that fire is only 5% contained. Dry conditions, humidity in the teens, and strong winds create a real firestorm situation. Hard to fight. Now, take a look at the profound drought in the US, Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas. This Summer is gonna be lit, and not in a good way. Maybe the predicted super will come to the rescue

From:

Bill McKibben:

at the most basic level we have no more important task than converting absolutely everything we can, right away, to sun & wind & batteries, so we stop pouring carbon into the air & making the (extreme heat) problem ever worse.

And the horrible part is that we CAN do this, which makes the fact that were not doing it as fast as we can deeply & profoundly immoral.

Hell, no one is even asking Americans (Australians) to do with less, because that is clearly impossible. Were just asking them to do with slightly different, & save money in the process.
