FLOODING

Powerful footage of the flooding in beautiful Riudoso. Behold the power of water, rising from 1' to over 20' in under an hour, sweeping away trees, even entire houses. This is all made worse by the burn scar from last year's massive forest fire.

It is always interesting to see how successive El Nio events and La Nia events modulate the 12-month average global warming time series. The 1997-1998, 2015-2016, 2018-2019 and 2023-2024 El Nio events are readily detectable as bumps in this graphic from .

And the slight temporary cooling of the past months is due to a brief La Nia event that took place a few months ago.

Gotta love the folks who are afraid of future geoengineering and simply do not get it that humans are doing geoengineering right now.

Have been doing it for about 150 years.

Have been told for over 100 years that we are doing it. But, yeah, a woman told us first, doesn't really count, does it.

The human-generated climate crisis sweeping our planet means Earth is becoming a less hospitable place for people with epilepsy and other health conditions aggravated by heat, including heart disease, diabetes, and dementia.

Western Europe Sees Hottest June on Record - because apparently 2024's record needed some friendly competition!

Native forests sink more carbon than expected, inverse modeling reveals

(... when I first got into this circa 2000 we thought climax ecosystems were "net zero", we're learning that they keep capturing CO2)

The noaa.gov site is slow to publish the June average of atmospheric CO. In these times of Trump's war on climate science (building and staff already affected), this makes me worry about the end of the Keeling curve, the valuable record of 67 years. Daily measurements still coming in, though.

The and is something the rest of the world - especially, the needs to match. But alas, the is hurtling in the opposite direction.

From 2023: Even when the rains come, the water shortages remain. One report showed Texas utilities lose more than 500,000 acre-feet of each year, enough to meet the annual needs of Austin, Forth Worth, El Paso, Laredo, and Lubbock combined.

"Frequent droughts are swelling the flow of migrants into South Africa. They are also easing the border crossing .

Beitbridge Town, home to 58,000 inhabitants, is very dry. The town and its surroundings, which are marked by parched earth and thorny trees, is the last foothold of Zimbabwe before one crosses into South Africa. But not everyone traveling across the border goes through the high-tech immigration and customs gates at the official Beitbridge crossing, where shiny cameras capture faces, and every traveler is fingerprinted.

While South Africa has long been a destination for those fleeing conflict and political instability elsewhere on the continent, recently the number of migrants has been rising.

Thats because Beitbridge is located next to the Limpopo River, which meanders eastward along the Zimbabwe-South Africa border before passing through Mozambique and emptying into the Indian Ocean. The towns booming formal economy is fueled by legal cross-border haulage and warehousing. Its informal economy is built around smuggling migrants and cargo into South Africa across the riverbed, and to a lesser extent, out of it, for those coming back."

Death Toll Reaches at Least 119 in Texas Floods, With 173 Missing

Officials defended their actions in the hardest-hit county, where no survivors have been found since Friday and questions are mounting over disaster preparation and flood warnings.

Governor Abbott, when asked questions on Tuesday about investigating what went wrong, referred to such inquiries as the words of losers and compared disaster response to football, saying only losing teams focused on their failures.

I hope those words begin to really haunt Gov. Abbott, a well as other federal and state officials. The flooding could not be prevented, but deaths could have been prevented with better warning systems. Ignoring the effects of climate change are an issue too.
