The annexation playbook borrows from climate denial tactics

Please consider donating to The Australia Institute to fund an ad against the governments' imminent plan to work with the Coalition to weaken environmental laws and to stop organisations like The Australia Institute from taking action.

"Earlier today, we received confirmation the Government is intending to gut Australias environmental protection laws next Tuesday, with the help of the Coalition. Their proposed changes come at the behest of the powerful salmon industry but will also ensure more coal and gas projects are approved in the future.

But the real devil is in the details.

An amendment intended to prohibit third-party civil society organisations from challenging government past approvals of projects is meant to exclude the Australia Institute and its supporters from doing our work. It comes after we triggered a review of destructive salmon farming in World Heritage-listed Macquarie Harbour under federal environmental protection law, angering the aquaculture industry.

Now, these laws are being rewritten so powerful corporations can bypass scientific evidence, democratic due process, and the scrutiny of the public altogether.

Prime Minister Albanese is still counting on the climate vote to win a majority at the next election, hoping this legislation will pass under the radar.

We need to demonstrate that the public is watching and expects better. Together, we have a chance to shock the Government into backing down or at least delaying these changes.

Our designers are working around the clock to create a full-page ad to carry our message (a draft version is at the link above). If we can raise the funds, we can put it in at least four major newspapers next week and hire a mobile billboard to circle Parliament House on the same day.

Now we just need the funds. I wasnt intending to write to you again so soon to ask for your help. But we only have a few days to throw everything we can at stopping this legislation in its tracks."

Young people in southern Madagascar are the unwilling pioneers of the impact of climate change and report extremely high levels of anxiety, depression, and climate change worry, with many describing a sense of hopelessness about the future.

In the "Past and Present Climate" section of our 2-week Computational Tools for Climate Science course, students will explore reanalysis and paleo proxies to understand historical climate patterns.

In a warming world, we experience more heatwaves. Thing is, they induce feedbacks. If we heat coastal waters, their ability to store organic carbon decreases... you know, the same carbon we could like to not go back to the and drive the fueling the warming.

An interesting graph from the UKs Office of Budget Responsibility. This shws that though heading for net zero will have initial costs, by 2040 the financial benefits outweigh these.

This does not even include the costs of not reducing emissions:

>These calculations did not include the benefits from avoided climate change impacts or other co-benefits. The OBR report pointed out: The costs of failing to get climate change under control would be much larger than those of bringing emissions down to net zero.

See the report and the references included for a lot more detail.

My takeaway from The Ministry for the Future (2020) by Kim Stanley Robinson: is required for a diverse population to reverse the climate crisis. Oligarchs are too splintered to coordinate global carbon sequestration. Central banks are run by a handful of executives who could change the rules of money to reverse but won't until they face personal consequences for their apathy.
