Climate Change

The ground is swallowing homes in this Native village in Alaska. Residents have no choice but to move.

The climate crisis is causing the permafrost to melt in Alaska, forcing the village of Nunapitchuk to relocate.

This week's at the library:
- a damaged copy of Positive Tipping Points: How to Fix the Climate Crisis
- a second-hand copy of the 1982 classic Lamarck the Mythical Precursor: A Study of the Relations Between Science and Ideology published by (there aren't that many books on Lamarck)
- a former library copy of The Environmental Consequences of War: Legal, Economic and Scientific Perspectives. This one came from the holdings of the JSCSC (Joint Services Command and Staff College)'s Hobson Library, one of the UK's largest military libraries (!), probably the most unusual provenance for any of the books I have.

From a donor yesterday:

"Thank you for the work youre doing to educate & inform people. Im glad to be a small part of the effort."

You said it, Tracy. We couldn't do ANY OF IT without great people like you that care about the right things!

Residents like Jane Changawa said they now live in fear of the changing weather. Flooding in 2024 displaced thousands of families in Nairobi County, while drought has driven food inflation so high that everyday essentials now cost up to eight times what they did a few years ago. For many, that means skipping meals or relying on unsafe water

In the face of current climate change, I think it is most important to listen to the voices of people who are from Rapa Nui and other Pacific islands, who are already dealing with the effects.

Why climate solutions need to be disability friendly

A Belgian woman with disabilities, living near Lige, survived a nightmare in 2021. France the woman in question - is deaf, visually impaired, and uses a wheelchair. She had to crawl up the buildings stairs to save herself from drowning when she was caught in the catastrophic floods of that year.

Agriculture, forestry and other land uses together account for about 62% of Africa's greenhouse gas emissions. At the same time, land degradation, deforestation and biodiversity loss are eroding Africa's resilience

I'm just back from the , where the plants think it's :

Blackcurrant bush is in bud.
Blueberry plants have flowers, and fruit.
Raspberries are flowering, as are strawberries.

I've removed the flowers, and left the blueberries for the wildlife.

I also found a couple of Raspberry plants which appear to have grown from seed, so I've moved them into a better position.

It's astonishing how much is still growing strongly.

It is too warm, there needs to be a few good hard frosts to help with pest control, and to work some winter magic.

is not a conspiracy theory, it is real.

First snow of the winter!

It won't last obviously.
We always have snow mid-November.
It used to be way more a few years ago but

Over more than 10 years, this amounts to just 630 million US dollars, highlighting a severe underinvestment in approaches designed to safeguard those most affected by the shift to a low-carbon economy
