As a community maybe we the next time we think of posting something related to science to try to address The Climate Emergency we could instead ask ourselves if posting something related to helping educate and support each other to change our culture and nurture our communities might be more productive.

We need to get away from our obsession with science and start thinking about our hearts, spirits and intuition and community.

While we're on the topic of creating trauma-informed community: if you or anyone you know is a survivor of childhood abuse *we have started Queer-specific, peer-run, peer-facilitated group. It's open to anyone who identifies as the above and is screened. Please spread the word.*

Flood warnings today cover every route between my street and the town centre. I didn't measure but looks like over a 50 mile round trip to get there avoiding the risk areas I live less about 0.4miles away.
Times like this I am glad I live uphill and that I keep extra food in stock in the winter.
The direct route by mobility scooter is via a subway (path under a road) that often floods in heavy rain. And we get a lot more heavy rain then we used to.
Stocking up and hibernating.

The GRACE Follow-On satellite mission uses technology developed for to observe critical indicators of climate change through changes in the Earth's gravitational field.

The mission uses a laser interferometer with nanometer accuracy between two satellites in Earth orbit. Researchers at are not only involved this mission, but also in future similar missions due to their expertise in the design of laser interferometers.

Climate Change

Changing seasons

The BBCs is always worth reading and Id recommend subscribing. Here are the highlights of the edition:

  • Spring is coming earlier and autumn is ending later due to climate change, affecting plant and animal life cycles.
  • The science of phenology, which studies seasonal changes effects on life cycles, is explained, with records dating back to 1736.
  • Natures Calendar, a citizen science project, tracks these changes and needs more volunteers.
  • Extreme weather events, their impact on coffee production and fishing, and answers reader questions about climate.
  • Polar bears in the Arctic and efforts to reduce festive waste.

A toothy toadstool. A vegetarian piranha with a distinctive mark. And a pygmy pipehorse floating in the Indian Ocean shallows.

These wild wonders were among the hundreds of previously unknown species of animals, plants and fungi that scientists named and described for the first time in 2024, expanding our surprisingly limited knowledge of Earths diversity.

I really like informative year recap videos and this one by Simon Clark on in 2024 is one of them:

When do we get to start banning advertising and sponsorships for aeroplane travel (including package holidays that depend crucially on it) It worked well enough for cigarettes, didn't it

We aren't yet in a position to restrict the actual flights yet (not to decarbonise them) but at least ceasing to promote it would be a start.
